Pilot:

Challenging day. Went a bit past Spaulding which was kinda hard to get there and was a real bitch to get back. Spent the majority of the day below 10k, got rained on several times, hit lots of nasty sink and spent way too much time climbing. Day had a fair bit of minor blow up all over and lots of washed out dead air afterwards. Getting to Herlong wasn't too bad. Going past, I entered the Susanville area kinda low, but saw a cloud was hoping would pay off just north and it did work. I went a little past Spaulding as there was a cu there that appeared quite towering so was hoping to stock up on altitude there for the leg home which worked, although I did get drizzled on. Leaving the Spaulding area there was a big area of wash out from Susanville to past Herlong, so slowed it down and stopped for some truly crappy lift. I ended up getting to Herlong pretty low just as it cycled and the area had nothing but weak lift for a while. I spent an hour trying to find good enough lift for a glide to make it home and just surviving on low, weak lift within glide range of Herlong. It looked like it was already fine halfway from Herlong back to Air Sailing and I probably had the altitude to make it to this patch of sky, but if it didn't work, making it back to Herlong was marginal, so I didn't attempt it. Eventually I found something and had a fast, high and stress free glide home. On this flight, I also passed 2000 glider hours. Here's to 2000 more!
