Mediocre at best blue wave day. Forecasts were calling for strong SW winds starting around 8,000. Oddly enough, when I launched the winds were slightly easterly at the surface. I took a very high tow to nearly 9,000' up to Tule Peak (since lower altitude winds were forecast to be weak), hoping the winds would be plenty strong and westerly at that altitude and I could use the Tule ridge as a stepping stone to get into wave. What I actually found was 10 knots or less of westerly wind at the peak which was just strong enough for me to ridge soar at minimum sink speed and not much else. Further north by Susanville there were some lennies, but were well out of reach. After about half an hour without much improvement I decided to try the west face of the Dogskins, that didn't go much better. Thermals were just starting to kick up so I managed to get enough height to fly back to Tule peak for another go. I managed to finally find anemic half knot wave at about 9000' between Tule and the Dogskins, but fell out of that pretty quick. I headed towards Freds Mountain and found some better wave up there which I presume was the primary. Further south over Reno was clear lenticulars setting up even though I was under blue. Unfortunately, it was getting late enough and I still needed to derig before sunset, so didn't use that for very long before heading back. When I landed, surface winds were calm. Had a little higher hopes for the day but the winds were more SSW than SW which didn't help and all the forecasts overestimated the wind strength, but it did feel good that a little persistence did eventually allow me to catch the wave.
