Pilot:

Fun day in the Sierra wave with a hint of ridge. A great personal first day at Air Sailing. Strong SSW winds, about 40 knots at altitude. Some well defined lenticulars, some embedded in a thick overcast layer. Fair bit of visible rotor. I never got any thermals, but in areas to the NW by Susanville there were cus that didn't have the thick overcast.
I started off by asking for a tow to the far (west side) of the Dog Skin Mountains thinking about some ride soaring. Did a few runs up and down those that had not very strong, but usable ridge lift. After that, slowed down and gained some altitude with what I think was a combination of ridge and rotor. I made contact with the wave at about 10k. I ended up jumping several waves, flying fast into the wind and through the sink side of the next wave, followed by rough rotor and than hitting the rising side of the next wave. Then headed south which was VERY slow with the strong southerly wind component. I did end up either falling out of the wave or flying through some dead patches here and there. Abeam Carson City I just could not make the wave work with either dead air or sink. At a certain point I got down to 11k until I started climbing out by the south end of Washoe Lake. I tried to go south again, but again couldn't make it work. I eventually gave up going south and headed north which went by real fast with a tailwind up to Susanville and it all went by pretty easily. Coming back and descending through final glide was a bit rough. There was virga and downwind of the Dog Skin Mountains had serious turbulence, so despite being high for final glider I didn't wanna speed up to get down and tear the wings off.
