Not a great day by any stretch and at times I had some real doubts whether I'll be able to make it back. Day had moderate easterly winds and blue, weak, scraggily lift that almost never went above 10k. Interestingly enough there was major blow up south of Minden that end up as spread out anvils becoming thick cirrus by late afternoon and a lot of smoke from a fire by Verdi. Spent the first half hour off of tow mostly sharing thermals with Darth Vader just south of the airport. I kept going south and crossed over by the Tesla Gigafactory. I ended up getting stuck by the mountains just north of Dayton Valley where I just couldn't get enough altitude to cross comfortably. I went SW along those mountains towards Carson Valley hoping to find the magic thermal that would let me cross without much luck. When I was working 1 knotters and couldn't get above 9,000' I switched my mindset to just getting back home. It took me a damn hour and being below 8000' several times till I finally found enough lift to safely cross I-80 back north, knowing that if I got low in that valley, I'm toast. The next half hour or so it actually got a bit better and I just went a bit north of and than back to Air Sailing to bleed off excess altitude before I called it a day.
