The forecast for the Sierra Nevada mountain range was for 50-70 knot SW winds at FL180. We began our day by heading north on our declared 1,000 km out and return task. We reached our northern turn-point at Constantia after approximately 3 hours and the then returned to our start point with a total time of 6 hours & 12 min. Since we were concerned about moisture in the Minden area we decided to spend the rest of the day in the southern half of the Sierra. While the conditions were mostly blue in the south, we had no trouble staying in strong wave and were therefore able to have a decent speed run. We timed our turn-points to allow us to land at Inyokern just before sunset. All in all it was just about as good as it gets.
Thanks to Joshua Approach and Oakland Center for their help in providing IFR clearances up to FL270. Also, thanks to Stewart and Miguel for crewing and Cindy for arranging the R-2508 Glider Area clearances.
