This was, basically, a blue-day practice flight.
There were high wispy cu about 15 to the east; the entire day had been sunny, so by 3 pm, when I was able to launch, the thermal sources were mature and thermals established. The bases of the wisps were probably 7500 msl, 6500 agl, so there was lots of room for error in finding the next thermal. And the wind was roughly NE at about 8 kt -- enough so that the thermal were mostly organized, but gently enough that even a mile high, the thermal source could be viewed and understood.
All the world looks flat from a mile up when the max vertical is 100-200 ft, but terrain features are not that hard to read. Woodlots do not generate thermals. Downslope, downwind fields do not. Upslope, upwind hills do, especially if topped by sharp-angled tall thingies like barns or silos. Sand-mine cone-shaped piles are very good. Rivers and marshes, never; lakes never, and lift is washed out downwind for a distance related to the wind speed, about 1/2 mi per kt for a big lake.
In all, the flight was a satisfying mid-term exam of whether I can identify likely thermal sources in the blue.
