Mission: Regain 1st place in Region 10 OLC.

I needed to score about 580 points to do that. Forecasts were basically all over. Figured it was worth a shot and the glider was assembled anyway. Launch into a great looking sky but cloudbase was low. Milled around a while and then set out for another low altitude tour of south central Kansas.

After turning Kiowa, things got easier, but I couldn't get within about 1000' of cloudbase! Had a nice run past Medicine Lodge with a mostly tailwind and interesting terrain. Near Kinsley, Steve mentions on the radio that "It looks better than it is" uh huh. and then wham! Finally a good climb to get above that 5500 ft ceiling! I wish he would've said something a few hours earlier!

Working the crosswind leg home went pretty well, but an issue was coming up. The triangle I had flown was not big enough. How to get those extra points. I was working the Oudie overtime and running a few scenarios through the calculator. All required some good lift after getting back to Sunflower but it was 6:40 when I got back! However there was some sort of late evening convergence or something set up right over the field and I climbed to the highest point of the day at 7 PM.

Leah hooked up the trailer and headed north as I set out on a best L/D glide with a tailwind. McPherson was not quite far enough to get me the distance I needed but I had extra altitude and stretched out to the north. Rolled to the south end of the runway to max out that leg. Mission Accomplished!

Thanks to Mike Logback for meeting us at the airport and helping de-rig.
