Frustrating day where nothing was working out as planned with lots of OD. In the morning there was plenty of altocumulus shading the ground. It gradually started burning off, but there was still a fair bit by noon. I started out heading west towards Quincy while the conditions were still fairly weak, not terribly high and blue. Got kinda low by Nervino as for 10 minutes or so I was flying in the shade of remanents of the morning alto cus. I used a bit of weak lift to get just enough height to get to Beckwourth peak which I figured would have the best lift in the area, and it indeed delivered a 5+ knotter. As I continued towards Quincy I noticed some smoke on the mountain on the south side of town and decided to turn around just in case a fire TFR was put out (I later found out there wasn't). I started heading south where it looked like a good line of cu had formed between Sierraville and Truckee. The air up to it was pretty dead and as I got there it started to OD and the entire Sierraville area was in shadow. I again got low and worked some weak lift I found here and there under the overcast to get back up. As I headed back east and back into sunglight it got better and better. I wanted to make a final run to Lovelock and back. After passing pyramid lake for the most part what I found was sink, good looking clouds that didn't deliver nearly as much as I had hoped and it was just beginning to OD around Lovelock too. Decided to just turn around and head home while I still had a very comfortable glide back.
