Fun and cold day of rock polishing and weak thermals. Moderate NE winds and fractocumulus at around 9k. Mostly ridge soared the eastern face of the Dogskins which allowed me to run at 80-100 KIAS. The closer and higher you were to the crest, the better the ridge lift worked. Shortly past 14:00 I made an attempt at flying the thermals which were forecast to be 2k-3k AGL. I got one decent climb to 8.5k on the hills at the north end of the Dogskins. I was trying to see about using that to make a Herlong and out trip. That was by far the best thermals I saw all day, so wussed out and turned around about half way there. After coming back, I was hoping some of the clouds over the Warm Springs valley had lift under them. Unfortunately, they didn't have much of anything and I turned around too late to make it back to the Dogskins so had to land.
