The plan for today was to fly south 140km to a remote start point. With weak wave in the morning, we did well to average 92kph getting to the start. The finish was also remote, with a long glide out off the end of the wave and back. But in the middle, the wave was extremely strong and marked by impressive clouds. The real Sierra "monster" wave. We saw 15 knots on the averager while flying at Vne. We had to pull the airbrakes out several times to avoid being sucked into the stratosphere. (No Perlan oxygen system with us today.)

A jet pilot at 42,000ft reported difficulty keeping to his assigned altitude and said there were lenticular clouds above him. Below us, a single-engine aircraft was being punished by the wave and the pilot said on the radio that he could not understand why his twin-turbo was going down with the nose pointed at the sky. We actually called ATC to give them advice on where to send that aircraft so that he could follow us in the wave lift.

We operate in the flight levels through a letter of agreement with Oakland Center. We have permission to use the military airspace via a Sage 2 clearance with Johsua Approach. The controllers were very helpful to us today, giving us big block altitude clearances.
