Week late posting straight from the Oudie due to my EW microrecorder betraying me again. This was a fun flight but very challenging to make it back. Blue lift to 9+ k and appreciable but not excessive NW winds. First half of the flight was good, made it without too much trouble to the Stead area. Tried my hand ridge soaring Petersen Mountain for the first time and it worked great. Came back to Air Sailing and headed NW which is when the trouble began.
First, I found nothing but sink by State Line Peak and it kept getting weaker but I turned around a bit too late. I realized I was too low to safely glide home once I turned around and I had to regain some altitude and had to keep Herlong in range as a standby for a potential landout. I spent the next hour and a half working weak crap that wouldn't go above 7k. It wasn't that hard staying up, but nothing went high enough for me to start venturing far enough back SE especially with a direct headwind to Herlong if I had to turn around. There was teaser cus west of me over the mountains but I was below the crest of the ridge and couldn't reach em. Eventually I found something usable enough that got me to almost 8k by the north foothills of State Line Peak. The glide home started slow but I quickly had Air Sailing made with room to spare so I might have been able to get home with less of an altitude cushion.
