I couldn't be at the Region 7 contest today, so I decided to go flying.
It was a hot and windy day. Thus the low thermals were broken and unworkable. I gave myself 3 "tows," the last to 3000 agl, which reached the organized lift. Bases were about 4000 at first, with only a narrow lift band, then as the afternoon wore on, the bases went to 6000 plus or minus.
After a couple hours' struggle (no, I did not attempt the triangle I'd set), I was up east of Chetek (Y23) with much woodland and water between myself and anything workable.
When it's windy like today -- winds at this point were estimated 195 at 28 kt at 5000 ft msl -- the very large thermal sources generate streets and the small thermal sources don't work.
After I used the engine to get past the woods and water, I got low again, and after re-starting the engine soon ran into the street from home.
It's always humiliating to have to start the engine when the world contains thermals. As I came to the downwind end of the Rusk Prairie (Menomonie is at the west mid of that), there was a lovely dust devil at its north = far downwind end.
Solo dis-assembly in gusts over 20 is always a challenge. But we point the trailer into the wind and work carefully.
