Another day dodging thunderstorms and showers. It was forecast for major blowup down south and it did deliver. Cloud bases were anywhere from 12k to 14k. Occasionally very strong lift at over 8 knots. Later on in the day, plenty of rain shafts, some lightning and lots spreading anvils blocking out the sun. I Intentionally decided to stay close in today just in case I do land out and tried to get some triangle points out of it. Headed S first, trying to fly the good air down there before it blew up. Got a little low by Rawe Peak, but once I connected with the clouds over the Pinenuts it was gangbusters. Wanted to turn Pinenut airfield but had to turn early as it was under a massive rain shaft. Went to Lovelock next. Coming back from Lovelock it still wasn't too high, had some headwind and I was flying over no man's land, so wasn't too picky about my thermals and tried to stay high. By the time I got back to Pyramid Lake, there was a good street heading west and the sky to the S was very dark. Decided to round the S edge of Frenchman's Lake and headed back. Made it back quite high, but there was big rain shafts just S of the airport, so decided to loiter N for about 45 minutes where the entire airmass was going up from the outflow and had no problem staying up and high without much circling. Ended up opening the spoilers from 11k before another rain shaft around Stead got too close. As I heard, during that loitering period a big gust front passed through, so it was a good thing I did.
