My first flight in the Alps of 2018. Also, my first pre-declared 300km triangle in the Alps. Great day, nice cu, no storms along the main spine of the Alps (where I had planned my flight route). However, thermal-strength varied greatly. A few things prompted me take a lot of mediocre thermals, depressing my speed: (1) relatively low cloud-bases after starting my task (initial base was 2,800m - around 9,000 feet); (2) very limited land-out opportunities on my first (westbound) leg; (3) a 50-60km wide blue gap on my second leg; and (4) unwarranted concern prior to my two valley crossings. In hindsight I could definitely have flown a bit more aggressively (i.e. faster) and skipped a few climbs. After flying in Boulder for a year I was struck how close together the thermals are in the Alps. Grossglockner, Austria's tallest mountain, was shrouded in clouds and inaccessible. Fairly hazy, so not the best day for pictures. Practically no wind at altitude - nice thermals, no ridge lift (other than regular thermal-induced up-slope winds). Very nice lift along the south-face of the northern limestone range late in the day.
