Fun little jaunt into Oregon. Decided to go north today as every XCSkies model said there would be precip south and I've already spent far too much time this season dodging rain. For the most part, pretty strong 6 knot lift with bases around 13k-15k and 15-20 knots of SW winds aloft. Later in the afternoon, many areas blued up. Released into lift that felt better on tow than once I got off and barely climbed for 10 minutes or so before really getting going. Going over Honey Lake almost all the clouds were lying and produced next to nothing so I ended up below 10k by Susanville but managed to work my way back up. The rest of the way north was gangbusters with good streeting, strong lift and next to no circling. There was a large fire E of Alturas and with the SW winds by time I reached Goose Lake it was very smoky and visibility was getting considerably poorer. I turned Farr shortly before 15:00 and now had a headwind going home at the same time conditions were getting weaker. I tried to stay high and accepted weaker lift than I did going N just in case. Once I passed the Warner Mountains there was good looking clouds to the E and blue until about Honey Lake going S. I decided to take the blue where there are some farmers fields and I could probably make Susanville or Herlong if things got dicey where further E there was nowhere good to land. I did tone down the MacCready knob a bit but reconnected with clouds and lift in the mountains just north of Amedee Aaf where I made final glide. Sure beats going to work!
