Surprisingly good wave day. When I launched around 12:30, surface winds were calms and the SW winds didn't start until about 6,000', so I took an extra high tow to 7,500' to the west faces of the Dogskins. The winds there weren't howling, but were in the teens which is good enough to do some ridge soaring. There weren't any lenticulars, just some rotor clouds around 8,500' and fractocumulus. Took me about 45 minutes to find the wave, and I found it just SW of the Dogskins along the upwind side of some rotor clouds. The rest of the flight was pretty fun, but uneventful, cruising at 15k-17k. Winds at 17k were about 45-50 knots out of the WSW. At times, you hit strong patches of wave going up at 8+ knots, but for the most part the air was going up about 4 knots. I decided against going further north towards Susanville as the cloud layer at 8k-9k there was broken to overcast, and even now having a reliable artificial horizon, I'd rather not cruise VFR on top so just did another run along the Tahoe Rim Trail. I arrived at Air Sailing way way high, as I wanted to pass over the KRNO class C with plenty to spare just in case I hit sink. Did a quick 10 mile out and back run to the SE of Air Sailing at high speed to bleed off the altitude and landed about 15 minutes before sunset. At this point surface winds were still calm, but even by pattern height the winds were 25+ knots, so the strong winds migrated lower in the atmosphere compared to the start of the flight.
