Another 1,000K day so we did another - trough line was soon filled with clouds but we planned, and stayed west of the showers so no probs apart from it being pretty slow going out into wind.
The route home had Cu until near Narrandera where a storm had passed. There the air became dead and the clouds failed to deliver, though we saw two
other gliders, one heading into the storm for some reason!?
Turning for home near Coleaba we noticed a line of wisps across the now 17 knot west wind and figured it was the familar late afternoon shear wave that happens here. By getting just upwind of those we started to hold and then regain height in recurring thermals. From 10,000ft below glide and 123:1 glide slope in to Benalla in a quiet looking sky at 7PM we got to 2,000ft above and 25:1 glide in and arrived at Benalla 10 mins ahead of schedule at 1950 with 1021km on the Oudie - and ran for a late dinner date in the Northo!
An amazing day despite the average speed being a slow 88kph out near Ivanhoe. Only serous optimists would have given us any chance of success but persistence, the evening wave and the mighty Nimbus paid off!
