Not the best of soaring days, but beats being on the ground. Got a bit of a late start, I didn't land late and I didn't really push hard today as it was clear the day didn't have the potential for an impressive flight. 10-25 knots of SW winds aloft. Ratty thermals that often disappeared as you turned into them or didn't provide more than 1/4 turn of good lift even when banking hard. I had to keep a close eye on my averager to see how well the uneven thermals were actually working. Many climbs were weaker than 4 knots. Lots of strange high cloud formations that were some combination of alto cu, very high normal cu, cirrus and some had a hint of a lenticular shape. Most of the flight was blue with a few sparse honest to goodness cus E of the Pinenuts. Overall a very hard to read sky. Some areas of strong sink.
Took a lot higher tow than usual as all the good lift I felt on tow was below 800' AGL and that's a bit low even for my taste and the rest of the tow didn't have any lift that felt wide enough to release and turn in. First half hour the lift seemed to top out below 10k. I did manage to leave the Virginia range at over 13k. There was a few decent looking cu just E of the Pinenuts that worked decently. When I left the Pinenuts I headed SE towards Hilton Ranch and found a fair bit of sink on the way by Wellington but I got decent climbs to get back up near Bald Mountain. I turned Hawthorne airport with plenty of height. I was thinking of maybe going to Mina but wussed out as the sky looked pretty blue in that direction and the sky was being pretty mysterious today. Coming back wasn't too much of a challenge. I took my last climb by Silver Springs to 14k and finished off the altitude with a run to State Line Peak before coming back to land at Air Sailing.
