Exceptional mid October thermal day. Blue with lift up to a bit over 12k, some averaging 5 knots. 10 knots or so of W winds aloft. No cus, but some alto cus and cirrus whose shadows I had to contend with. High altitude lenticulars, but the winds were far too light at the lower altitudes for any usable wave. Released in a gust I mistook for a thermal and was down to pattern altitude before making a save right over the airport. The air over the Virginias was quite good. Crossing I-80 and highway 50 soutbound was a bit lower than usual but not terribly difficult. Had a great climb over Rawe Peak and the northern half of the Pinenuts had lots of good lift. The southern half of the Pinenuts both soutbound and back northbound weren't great and I hit a fair bit of sink that knocked me below 10k. I turned Bald Mountain at the southern tip of the Pinenuts and it took me a while to get back up over 10k. Again crossing the highway 50 and I-80 valleys was surprisingly easy. The lift on the Virginias was still good going northbound around 16:30, but the lift started shutting down shortly after. I was hoping to hit 1 last good climb at 17:00 over State Link Peak to make a final run to Herlong as my last turnpoint and glide home in dead air, but the lift at that point was barely sustainable at maybe 2 knots on the knetto below 10k so I turned early and headed home. There actually was still lift on the final leg home, but it was mostly below 8k. Very fun last hurrah cross country for thermal season 2019!!! (but I'm quite eager for wave season 2019-2020)
