Very interesting day. Katie and I decided to fly an arrowhead 500km - Gurley - Emerald - Coonabarabran and home. Skysight was forecasting good early cu to the north but rapid overdevelopment with rain and a gust front spreading out from Kaputar as the storm collapsed - hence that choice of initial direction. We launched just before 12 and I struggled to stay airborne but then got away nicely with Kaputar already looking O/D. Passed up some good climbs just before Kaputar to get to the really dark stuff which then didn't work very well at all. Just abeam the mast we found a good climb off one of the spines to base and it was raining on us by cloudbase at 10,000. I headed north towards Gurley while Katie decided to cut short and head for Emerald. I had a good run and then on the way south I picked up the convergence flowing out from Kaputar. It was a textbook visible flow, about 45 degrees mini cold-front full of smoky air, and clear air to the west. You had to push well west of the good cu in order to find lift, but it was spectacular. Most climbs were 8-10kt averages and after Emerald I hit a 14kt beauty but unfortunately was already at 10,000 when I caught it. Coonabarabran was in rain, so we both turned early and raced home to Keepit. Strong southerly outflow from Kaputar made runway 34 a no-brainer. Very interesting day.
