Another amazing Minden wave day! Two days ago the forecast said weak wave between Reno and Alpine. Yesterday it looked a little better so I planned an early go. It turned out to be very good…if the wind direction was more SWerly it would have been excellent.
I declared a 767 km out & return which we completed at 215.9 kph (134.1 mph), beating a 72 mph record that my brother, Tom, and I set 16 years ago from Ely.
Only zig-zags of the day were just after release and several minutes of holding while we waited for a clearance from Oakland Center.
Late in the day we were racing toward Minden when the battery voltage dropped while I was talking to ATC…this caused the flight recorder to crash…I immediately turned it back on but it took more than 60 seconds to recover so the OLC did not score the remainder of the flight. We aborted to Bishop at this point and lost 90 km. (This is an overly restrictive rule…no one is going to run an engine or land and relaunch in less than several minutes.)
Had clearances from Joshua Approach to use the R-2508 Glider Areas to FL250 and clearances from Oakland Center for an altitude block of 17,000 feet MSL to FL230 between R-2508 and Minden.
Thanks, Sergio & Paulo for sharing the Nixus, Dan and Soaring NV for the tow service, Joshua & Oakland for the outstanding service, and Paulo & Jackie for crewing and bringing the trailer to Bishop.Pilot
