Pretty good day. Strong climbs with good high cus. Thermals felt somewhat irregular with tight multiple, short lived cores. Strong W winds from 15-30 knots aloft. I spent a good part of the day flying with Bill Hill (Zulu) which was fun. Pretty late start as our trusty towpilot Eddie reported soft conditions around 12:30 from his training flight tows so we waited. First 45 minutes or so getting up high and getting to the foothills of the Sangre De Cristos was decent, but nothing exceptional. Once connecting with the clouds over the mountains it got pretty damn good with lots of dolphining and strong climbs. I turned Melby Ranch just on the other side of the Colorado border. Coming back S was pretty uneventful and also good, although I flew a bit further west towards the valleys than when I was going N. Once leaving the mountains it was mostly blue and sparse cus N of I-40 but with some lift. Once crossing I-40 the sky turned pretty sinky everywhere. I wanted to turn Willard before heading home with my remaining altitude, but I wussed out and turned a few miles early while I still had a comfortable glide of steeper than 30:1. It was a good thing I did cause I hit lots of sink on that last leg and didn't even make 30:1 following MacCready 3. I also hit lots of sink in the traffic pattern and flew a closer in than normal base leg. There was big blowup later in the day way W past Albuquerque and to the SE, but nothing on course that was a hindrance. The blowup to the W brought lots of moisture into the upper atmosphere and by 18:30 (after I already landing) we were under high overcast which made derigging conditions cool and pleasant.
