Another amazing late summer soaring day in Colorado. Went to the Elk Mountains near Aspen for the first time and flew over all of the 14ers there: Castle Peak, Maroon Peak, N Maroon Peak, Capitol Peak, Snowmass Mountain, Conundrum Peak, and Pyramid Peak. These mountains are just absolutely spectacular - so beautiful I kept circling in middling lift just to take in the views :-) For good measure I also flew over two of the 14ers in the Sawatch Range that I missed yesterday: Mt Massive and Mt Oxford. Then headed south towards Canon City. Chickened out before a blue hole that would have allowed me to jump into the Wet Mountains. But there was already some OD there with virga and I didn't want to risk getting cut off on the way back north. I'm pretty sure it would have worked as the day gradually started to dry after 3:30 pm. Nice run back north along the east edge of South Park and back to the Front Range. The Cameron Peak Fire looked apocalyptic with a massive smoke plume rising as high as the tallest cumulonimbi. Turned at Button Rock Reservoir at the edge of the smoke. Lots of fire fighting air traffic in the area to the north of there.
