Fun labor day flying. Varied conditions from barely sustainable at the beginning to absolutely booming in the last 2 hours. Strong W winds aloft up to 25 knots. Pretty broken up, uneven thermals most of the flight. Hazy, poor visibility and somewhat muted sunlight. Launched a bit prematurely and had to save it from 800' AGL. First 30 minutes wasn't real good but slowly I climbed up to 14k before venturing off N. The air got completely smooth below 11k and I found what felt like very weak wave. I eventually turned around back S after 20 miles as there was just no convection up or down and I was too low to venture safely towards the Las Vegas area like I'd hope. At this point the first cus appeared by Wagonwheel. Next half an hour was slightly schizophrenic as I changed my turnpoint from Vaughn to Fort Summer to eventually Santa Rosa based on where the clouds were leading me. There was some virga just W of Santa Rosa that I skirted to the S but instead of finding lift on the outskirts I just found weak sink and got down to about 10k 15 NW of Santa Rosa before slowly working my way up in one so so climb after another. At that point and for the rest of the flight it really turned on and got better the further N I went. I decided to turn Ocate where the local air was so good I was dolphining at 90 knots just not to get sucked into the class A. Took my last climb in a nice 7 knotter about 15 SW of Las Vegas. I rounded Sandia Airpark before coming back to Moriarty just to make the S most leg of triangle a little longer and less lobsided.
