Another great Colorado soaring day despite much of the state being under a cirrus cover. Had declared a 500km O&R speed flight (Buttonrock Reservoir to Cochetopa Pass and return) and was on track with a task speed of 82 kts against a headwind after 200km when I got stuck in Salida. Climbed back out but the last 40 km to the turnpoint were devoid of cu's with thick cirrus on top. With unlandable terrain below this was not something I was going to try. Went northwest instead along the west side of the Sawatch Range under a shelf towards Aspen and then turned east near Independence Pass. Nice line through South Park and then run north along the Front Range convergence under overcast with virga. Back in the sun near Fort Collins. Turned onto Final Glide with 1000ft at MC 4, flew 100 kts and still gained 2000 ft along the way. Excellent day. Lift up to 13 kt average. Without the cirrus it would have been epic.
