The forecast called for WSW winds ranging from 50 knots near Inyokern in the south to 60 knots near Minden in the north. No moisture was expected in the south with cloudy conditions expected near Minden in the morning. We self launched from Inyokern near sunrise and found weaker conditions than expected. As we slowly headed north, the mountain wave conditions gradually improved. When we reached Topaz Lake just south of Minden, we decided to turn south rather than sacrifice altitude and speed necessary for the transition to Jobs Peak. Although we had few markers most of the day because of the dry conditions, we experienced stronger wave conditions as the day progressed, and successfully completed six legs between Inyokern and Topaz. Our only limitation was that the available daylight was less than 11 hours.
The glider is equipped with FAA approved navigation and strobe lights.
Thanks to Ron Gregg at SCSA for arranging a Sage 2 Clearance with Joshua Approach and Oakland Center for the Block Altitude Clearances between Bishop and Minden. Also, thanks to Joshua Approach and Oakland Center controllers for excellent service and safe passage during our entire flight. Finally, thanks to my copilot Bill Hill for his assistance during the flight and to our crew; Stewart, Morgan, and Dana for their participation in the launch and retrieval operations.Pilot
