Steve Lenter and I went hunting for wave and found it! But it didn't go all that high. We got stuck at 8500ft and simply couldn't punch through. Very strong wind today; had to maintain 50-60 knots to stay in position. There was probably a bit of directional shear at 8500ft and the wave weakened a bit too much. We escaped toward Ellenville; first with Kingston as an out and watched how the glide angle went until it was no longer an option. The glide angle improved and we continued. Ridge did not work near Ellenville, so we made a safe landing there and got a short tow back to Wurtsboro.
A tremendous amount learned about the wave and forecasting. Wind strength, stability, inversions, directional shear, positioning of the wave and escape options all were circulating in our minds for an hour and a half of very challenging soaring. All of the prep work and study of the fields came into action today. As such, huge thanks to Roman Micholowski and Richard Kaleta for scouting out the fields. For Warren and Rachel doing the long tows today. And for Steve Lenter for joining me on this exploration!Pilot
