This entry is a bit of a departure from the norm, because it is being written by the flight’s copilot. (Thanks to Dennis for letting me write this.) This is the first long soaring flight of the new Arcus-J jet sailplane. The aircraft was in Minden Thursday. Weather predictions for Friday indicated heavy winds and rain in Minden, but favorable wave conditions in the southern Sierras, so Thursday morning we flew the Arcus-J to Inyokern and prepped it for the flight Friday. The predictions were correct. Minden was pinned down under heavy ground winds and rain, while Inyokern had light ground winds, strong SSW winds aloft and classic lenticulars.
We launched at sunrise, and climbed with power until contacting wave, where we shut down and stowed the engine at around 8000’. We began northbound in consistent lift and obtained clearances from Joshua approach to FL290. We ran easily at 18K to 21K, turning southbound near Mammoth. Leg 2 (southbound) was also consistent, and we continued south of Inyokern until the lift tapered off. Leg 3 (northbound), was again reliable, and we extended past Bishop before turning south. Leg 4 saw changing conditions, and we got down to 15K near Lone Pine. After some scratching, we regained lift, altered our track slightly, and continued south. We soon had our margins back, running about 19K, and turned northbound at Inyokern. Leg 5 was again consistent and we ran in the low 20’s to Lone Pine, where we turned shorter than the previous legs to avoid the gap that had caused trouble on leg 4. Leg 6 saw us topping out at ~24K with lift continuing somewhat past Inyokern. We extended this leg past Rosamond to maximize the distance, turning for home at 13K. We extended and started the engine at 12,000, climbed to 13,500 and cruised home at 120 knots indicated (310 kph ground speed), arriving over Inyokern at 13,000, where we stowed the engine and made a slow descent through rough air to landing.
A few side notes: The Arcus-J flew for the first time only 16 days before this flight. I conducted the test flights out of Moriarty, and we trailered it to Minden, arriving Monday night. We assembled it Tuesday and spent a couple of days getting Dennis and crew checked out in it. We flew it the ~240 nautical miles to Inyokern (with a precautionary fuel stop at Bishop) on Thursday. The Arcus-J climbs well, and cruises fast at 15K – 18K. This first ‘real’ soaring flight demonstrated the jet sailplane’s ability to optimize soaring conditions. It confirms the advantages of a simple, reliable, low drag (~38:1 with engine extended) engine system that can be started at high altitude after hours of cold-soaking, and run fast enough to push through the winds associated with the Sierra wave. Thanks to Dennis for allowing us to create this amazing aircraft. Also thanks to Mark Mocho for his constant assistance throughout the project, Bill Hill for instructing, all of the soaring crew, Morgan, Stewart, Cindy, Rich, Jim P, Jim Y., and of course, my wife Laurie, for putting up with an insomniac jet sailplane designer.
