East Tyrol excursion day 1 with NOVA Pilots Team friends Hermann and Tobi and mutual friend Carsten.
The weather forecast predicted very little wind but late start with thermals and rather stable air. So, we were unsure about thermals when getting ready for take-off. The locals were to be surprisingly unwilling to go first – so I made the dummy, launching to the west from "Adler Lounge". Actually, the first thermals were pretty week, but OK. Still I didn’t succeed to go up really high at Rotenkogel, traversing the Isel Valley rather low, which made me king of getting stuck low in Defreggen Valley. While I was struggling to go high, the others overtook me.
Had problems again to get sufficient altitude before traversing to Staller Sattel. So I just thought: let's go for it! Traversed the saddle with very, very little altitude. Other than expected, there were NO thermals on the west side of Staller Sattel but plenty of sinking air mass.
I got lower and lower and switched "fighting mode". The day was to good to bomb out now! When I was already was about to decide where to land, I found some gentle lift right above the valley bottom. It was not large enough to fly circles and I softly piloted my PHANTOM in eights, being happy for its floating ability. Eventually this thermal took me all the way from the valley bottom up to 3000+ meters. Love it!
The remaining flight was sheer pleasure. In the end, I didn't dare to fly through the narrow gap at the beginning of Defreggen Valley to land down in Huben.
Overall: Lovely day, little wind, flying with friends, low safe – happy Till!
